Our story
SINCE THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES ...
...on Via Pelliccerie was the headquarters of the Furriers' Confraternity, which evidently had its shops here. Nearby, the Mercatonuovo (now Piazza San Giacomo) hosted a thriving market, which used the adjacent streets to dump the waste left over from the sales activities.
According to tradition, at Via Pelliccerie 4 there has been an inn called "Maddalena" since the 1400s, which people called "dirty," probably due to the precarious hygienic conditions and the waste that abounded in the neighborhood.
Over the centuries, the house at Via Pelliccerie 4 changed owners and uses several times, becoming a furrier's shop, then a linen and hemp seller's, then the studio of a professor of brass instruments (on the first floor) and a butcher's shop (on the ground floor).
IN THE MOST RECENT CENTURIES UNTIL TODAY:
From 1883 it returned to being a place where wine was served under the name "Alla fratellanza" managed by the innkeeper Maddalena Croatto.
In 1937 the inn took the name "Antica Maddalena", and from then until the present day the name Maddalena has always remained on the sign, by will of the successive managements who have gradually combined it with the various adjectives "antica", "vecchia" and even "sporcje" (dirty).
We chose to keep the old name and continue the tradition of Friulian taverns, which have always been a meeting place for our people. People come here for many reasons: to enjoy a glass of wine with friends, to conduct business negotiations, for an aperitif with friends before lunch, or to have dinner with a girlfriend.
OUR HISTORY AS MANAGERS:
Our story as managers is very simple: in 1987, we left Udine to move to San Daniele del Friuli, where we found a bar and sandwich shop looking for a manager. We took it over and gradually grew it into a charming restaurant, "Le Vecchie Carceri" on Via Guarnerio d'Artegna. After 22 years, we decided to return to the city, enchanted by this small, long-established and recently renovated osteria, where we hope to continue to uphold the tradition of hospitality in the spirit of authentic Friulian tradition.
